This June the short film, ‘Basement on a Hill’ will be filming a coffeeshop scene in Epic Espresso. Look out for it when it starts showing. Hopefully they’ll get some cool shots of the ristretto flowing!

Our fanatical baristas at Epic have been experimenting with a sublime mix of warm melted Belgian couverture chocolate and a double ristretto. The end result is the Ristretto Mojo, an intense almost chocolate ganache sensation with a foam-like texture. The Mojo needs to be stirred for ten seconds before drinking to achieve the gel consistency. Not for the faint-hearted and definitely worth trying once in your life. It’s kind of a ‘in the know’ type drink that’s not on our menu, but if you’re ‘in the know’ order it and then head straight to the gym.

The Perth heats of the AASCA Barista competitions have come and gone, but the celebrations continue on at Epic! Four of our budding baristas took the stage for the first time ever over the weekend, strutting their stuff and pulling out some stella performances. Angela took a stab at all 3 events, beginning with the barista comp on Saturday, followed by latte art and cupping on Sunday, and bringing home a runner up position in the cupping! She slurped her way through 24 cups of coffee, guessing 5 out of 8 groups correct in under 3.5 minutes! Nat took home the bronze medal in the latte art, with some beautiful rosetta and tulip action. Mike’s cool, calm and collected performance had the judges at ease with his laid back tunes, subtle humour, and well defined art. Dann is the consummate performer, firing up the crowd with his cheeky comments and crowd pleasing antics. Cor, Ali and I watched on like proud parents as all of our guys did us proud…bring on next year!!!

That’s right, we’re so busy now that we need three machines. The troops are loving our latest edition to the Synesso family, a baby two group Synesso Cyncra. WA’s best coffee just got faster!

Recently all the Epic males seem to be going through a bit of an X Files phase. Leading the charge is Mike with his constant commentary of X Files quotes. We’re up to season four at the moment but are struggling to get hold of copies of season one for some strange reason. Mike or Fox as he’s known in the store has got his copy of the last X Files movie in preparation for the Epic Espresso X Files video night, we’re even thinking of getting some X Files t-shirts printed up with ‘I want to believe………….perfect ristretto exists’ written on it. The truth is out there.

Two weekends ago the Epic team made the trek over to Melbourne to check out our coffee brothers in arms. Thanks to Andrew at the Maling Room for exciting us with what we call “Melbourne milk temperature’. To Mark at Brother Baba Budan for the cuppings of various quality single origins, to Nolan at Liar Liar for demonstrating that you can actually fit an Anfim hopper to a Mazzer Robur and to Con and Peter at 7 Grams for showing us why Con truly is World Latte Art Champion.
